Patients who are apprehensive about receiving dental treatment often avoid going to the dentist. Ultimately, this avoidance can lead to advanced disease and the need for expensive treatments that could have been avoided. Conscious Sedation Dentistry provides a safe, effective way to alleviate dental anxiety and provide patients with the treatment they need.
Conscious Sedation Dentistry makes use of a prescription medication that induces a drowsy, relaxed feeling. This is a medication administered orally or intravenously (IV). Due to the relaxing effects of the medication, patients must have a friend or family member bring them to the dental office and return them home. During Conscious Sedation Dentistry, patient's vital signs are monitored. Although patients are not completely unconscious, many patients are so relaxed that they may even nap through their dental appointment. Few patients have any unpleasant memory of their treatment.
Our doctors have special training that allows them to administer Conscious Sedation medications intravenously. Like oral sedation, intravenous sedation is offered to the anxious, the fearful or the very young patient. However, because the medication dose can be altered during treatment, it can be adjusted to a patients comfort level more easily than Oral Conscious Sedation medications. Intravenous Conscious Sedation Dentistry is a management technique that uses medications to assist the patient to cope with fear and anxiety.
Conscious Sedation Dentistry is an excellent method of treatment for patients who have any of the following concerns:
Conscious Sedation Dentistry is not for everyone. In fact, many of our patients with some dental anxiety decide not to use Conscious Sedation Dentistry. These patients often tell us that our caring, gentle approach provides them with a relaxing, pleasant experience even without sedation. The choice is really yours.
